Warm Nights - Hot Bites
With the increasingly warmer weather, our inland lakes in the N.E. Ohio / N.W. Pennsylvania region are experiencing some of the best fishing to be had all year. You do not have to worry about the weekender crowds yet and the fishing is great. Crappie and perch are really the fish to focus on right now, bass will be heating up with another 10-15 degree increase in water temps. If you have access to a boat, think cover. The crappies are relating to shoreline structure and can be caught in the shallower depths. Perch are feeding on baitfish which are being blown againts the causeways by the strong winds. If you fish floats , try areas between 2 to 6 feet deep. Chartreuse jigs are always a favorite of mine and will often produce when nothing else will. If you are not getting anything after about 15 minutes, try tipping the jig with a minnow. Berkely’s new Gulp-Alive products really do seem to attract the fish and last longer than real minnows. I have had my best luck with the 2.5 inch emerald shiner. Smallmouth will becoming very active soon and provide some of the most intense battles for fish under 5 lbs. Please remember if you have a young fisherman with you be patient and set standards that will carryover to the next generation. Always pick up your trash, obey the rules and regulations for your area and most of all have fun.
